I’m Anna Alfonso, the Senior Marketing Manager at West Edmonton Mall. My fashion story – some might call it an obsession! – began when I was about 10 years old, when I developed a passion for wearing thick, hip-hugging belts and my mom’s broaches. Even as a girl I recognized the importance of accessories! And, while my fashion sense has changed over the years, I’ve always enjoyed shaking things up a bit. These days I love to mash up classic pieces with prints (especially leopard) and an array of colours. My signature pieces include booties, exaggerated ruffle sleeves and tights in vibrant colours and patterns. I love to make the most out of my “wearing time.”
Anna’s Fashion Finds is a bi-weekly feature, where I highlight the latest fashion, beauty and lifestyle must-haves that I’ve found at some of the boutiques and retailers here at West Edmonton Mall.

Makeup Trends
The holiday season is approaching and there are a few trends and products that will make your festive look complete. This edition of Fashion Finds is an extension of the previous edition when I spoke with Susanne from Murale. In this edition, we discuss fall and winter makeup trends.
Q: What are the makeup trends for fall?
A: A lot of metallic, especially gold and silver.
Q: How can you incorporate these makeup trends into your everyday outfit?
A: Fall clothing seems to have metallic threads; the finish on handbags is metallic, and sequined skirts are also very popular. With this being said, understated metallic items can go very well with metallic makeup to bring your look up to the current trend. It can be as simple as having glitter in your nail polish. The Cargo line has a really cool makeup kit which features a glitter top-coat eyeliner to give your look a great finishing touch.

Q: Are there any eye makeup trends out there?
A: We have been seeing a lot of eyeliners that are inspired by the Mad Men era, as well as the cat-eye look. These thick eye liners go really well with a matte face, but not as much as we saw in the ‘80s. Today’s look has a lot more radiance and brightness. This goes well with the metallic trend, too, because with the matte face the metallics play off the light and have a really radiant effect.
Q: What is the best way to apply your eyeliner to achieve the cat-eye look?
A: I have found that the best way is to start at the outer corner and work in. This way you are working with gravity so that your hand falls in towards the eye. Start at the spot that is horizontal to the top of the eye and let gravity do its work. You can then fill in your normal eyeliner along the lid and you have a cat-eye!
Q: Do you recommend using a gel eyeliner, coal, or something with a specific application end?
A: Each type of liner works well. A lot of companies are starting to stay away from the hair tipped brush on any kind of application tool including liquid eye liners. Bobbi Brown is coming out with a doe foot brush this season instead of the hair because after a while, the hairs start to stick out in all directions and you don’t get a smooth and precise application.
Q: What shape are brows this season?
A: A little thicker and more focus is being given to them so they are really groomed.
Q: What is in trend for cheeks?
A: A very subtle contour for your cheeks. More colour under the cheek bone and less on the apple of the cheek. It’s just more fun, youthful, and sophisticated. Bronzer is also coming back. The bronzer should be used under your jaw bone and chin, and around the temple so that it adds a more structured and defined look, much like the trends in fashion we see today which are more strong and tailored clothing.
Q: What is popular in nail length this season?
A: Really long and somewhat pointed.
Q: I have noticed that on the runways and in fashion weeks there have been a lot of red lips. Are there any brands that you carry that have a great red lip colour?
A: “Strength” by Bare Escentuals goes on really matte and pairs well with glosses. YSL has some great colours that are smooth and go on really well —I love Rouge pur couture 01. Other great red colours include Estee Lauder wet cranberry shine and Stila long wear lip colour crème lover—this one is more of a matte red.

A great tip for making your red lips last all day: use a reverse liner on the outside of your lips before adding the lip colour then blend them together. The Cargo line carries a great reverse liner.
Q: How do we know which red lip colour is right for our skin tone?
A: 60 per cent of the population has a cool undertone and these people want to go with a cherry or wine red tone.
Q: What is new for fragrances?
A: A few of my favourites include Womanity by Thierry Mugler, Lovestruck by Vera Wang, and The Sophisticate by David Yurman.

Skin Care
As the winter months get closer our skin care becomes more and more important. This week I talked with Susanne from Murale to ask her some questions related to taking better care of our skin, what products are new and what specific products actually do for our skin.
Q: What are the newest product trends for skin care lines?
A: New products are close to being certified organic. Specific lines that have organic ingredients include Skin Authority, which has no parabens, dies, added fragrance, or animal testing. Juice Beauty is another new product. It features high efficacy, authentically organic, and pleasurable beauty solutions.

Q: When you are looking for a new skin care regime, what are the must-dos for skin care regime? Do you have to cleanse, tone, and moisturize to get the most out of your products?
1) A: You should always start off with a cleanser. It lifts and suspends the dirt particles and pollutants, which then you rinse off. Start in the centre and work outwards in a circular pattern rather than up and down, making sure to pay attention to certain areas like your T-zone. Once you have done the lifting and all the dirt particles and pollutants are in the suds or cream, you can rinse it off.
2) A: You exfoliate your skin after cleansing. You should cleanse, tone, and moisturize every day but you only need to exfoliate two to three times per week or three to four times in the summer if you have oily skin. Exfoliating makes your skin look bright and your makeup will look softer and fresher.
3) A: Next you use toner, which helps to refine your pores and help protect them. It helps reduce the pores in size and reduces moisture loss and keeps your skin’s hydration. The toner will also take any excess dirt that you may have missed with the cleansing step and will also remove dead cells and exfoliate your skin a bit.
4) A: You can moisturize as soon as you finish toning. A lot of moisturizers are concentrated and you only need one or two pumps. It is best to let it warm up on your finger tips to let it emulsify a bit then moisturize the area on your face that is driest first. For example, if your cheeks are the driest, pat that area first then the residue can go to the forehead and then the nose and chin. A lot of people tend to over moisturize, which is why a serum is good to use.
Q: What is the purpose of a serum?
A: Serums should be applied before a moisturizer. There are a number of different types of serums, depending on your needs. Someone who is dehydrated but concerned with firming should go with a hydrating moisturizer with a sunscreen and use a firming serum. Besides firming, there are also hydrating, anti-wrinkle, and stimulating serums.
Q: What is your advice for aging skin?
A: A lot of people think that as we get older we have to baby the skin more, but if anything, we need to be stimulating the skin more because cell activity starts to slow down. As we get older, our skin can take up to 40 days to repair if damaged.
Q: I just started using Lancome’s Visionnaire skin corrector, but I also use their Genifique serum. What is the difference between a skin corrector and a serum? Or do they do different things?
A: They do different things but you can use both. You can separate them by targeting one for daytime and one for night-time. You put the one that will do the exfoliating on first and use the more protective one on top. Depending on how sensitive you are the skin corrector will take some skin cells off, so you would want to use that at night when your skin is more protected and not abused. Synchronize your products to what your skin is already doing.
Q: How do you know what type of skin you have? A lot of people in Edmonton tend to have drier skin, how do we combat this?
A: A lot of people misdiagnose dehydrated skin for dry skin. You can tell your skin is dehydrated if you push up your cheek and see criss-crossing lines. One way to prevent this is to use toner or freshener to help preserve the moisture in your skin. Products used for treating oily skin can also cause dehydration because they are too harsh.
Q: What causes oily skin?
A: A lot of people say it is food-related, or related to hormones. Generally speaking, if you get oil on your forehead it is caused by the food you are eating. If you get oil somewhere in the middle of your face, it is caused by improper cleansing, hormones and stress cause oil build-up around the mouth and chin.
Q: Do you have any promotional offers that you can tell us?
A: We have our Bounce back coupon. So if you come in a book a consultation to go over what skin type you have and which products would be best for you, you will get some deluxe samples!

Ravishing red hair is such a hot beauty trend for summer, even celebrities are playing with this fiery shade. Red hair is something Hollywood has loved through the ages, but most recently, we have seen younger celebrities like Blake Lively going red for the season! Redheads can have different shades including everything from ginger and auburn to mahogany and strawberry brown. No matter the shade, one thing is for certain, redheads are ruling L.A. this season!

Q & A with Ali from RAIN Salon Spa
Q: Who can go red?
A: Anyone can go red! It doesn’t matter what your complexion is; anyone can have red hair. Women with vibrant personalities can pull it off the best.
Q: What do you have to change to make your new red hair look more natural?
A: Red hair will never really look natural unless it actually is natural. Auburn and light copper colours tend to look the most natural.
Q: What kind of makeup should you wear with your new red hair?
A: Something that stands out!
Q: Can you wear red lipstick?
A: Depends on the event — but yes, it can be very hot. I have seen lots of professional photoshoots with bright lips and red hair and it looks hot.
Q: What kind of hair maintenance do you have to do to keep your red hair vibrant?
A: Once the stylist rinses your hair, the colour will already start to fade. Most of clients come in a couple weeks after their new hair — but this is too late. You need to use a colour shampoo from day one.
Q: Which professional colour shampoo do you recommend?
A: BC colour therapy by Schwarzkopf
Q: Any tips for red hair maintenance?
A: I don’t recommend washing your hair every day. But if you need to, use a colour protecting shampoo and use BC colour therapy by Schwarzkopf once to twice a week.

This week’s Fashion Finds is a behind-the-scenes look at our Spring 2011 photo shoot – “Fashion to Love.”
We shot our campaign in a warehouse-style setting in Edmonton, where Canadian model Jessica Lewis brought spring’s trends to life.
Fashion this season is all about bright, knockout colours, feminine touches, masculine shapes, global prints and rock ‘n roll embellishments.
It was so exciting to work and collaborate with such a creative team!

Look for the WEM trend guide on Friday, April 15, in-Mall and in issues of Metro downtown.

The right jewelry can give sophistication to a simple outfit. We’ve seen jewelry become bigger and bolder in the last few seasons, and this trend is continuing for Spring 2011. Layered statement necklaces with a mix of metals and pearls, and global-inspired bib necklaces with multi-coloured stones are stunning additions to basic pieces. And don’t forget the wrist. Stack bracelets and cuffs in a variety of textures and finishes . . . anything goes. I like to create a soundtrack when I’m wearing jewelry; it lets me know I’m wearing enough!

Fashion Finds for February 22, 2011
A great way to stay comfortable while the temperature changes is by layering. The key is to avoid too many layers; you don’t want to look bulky and disorganized.
I always go with three layers at the most, in different neutral colours. Start with a soft camisole as your base and then add a fitted long-sleeve shirt in a thin material like jersey. Your third layer should be a slightly heavier sweater, or a jacket with ¾ sleeves. Play with different fabrics and designs for this final layer – it could be a sequined cardigan or a long, flowy sweater dress. These fashion finds are great for the last layer because they are great transition pieces that can be worn during the fall, winter, and spring!
Find: Michael Kors shawl belted sweater
